IEC 61850 Masterclass

8 – 9th of September
Novotel Melbourne on Collins

IEC 61850, the international standard for device communication in substations, is responsible for defining the communication between Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED). It specifies common data models for the IEDs, as well as the complete engineering process. IEC 61850 has already had a significant effect on the world of protection engineering with a large number of operational substations implementing the standard successfully.
The application of IEC 61850 introduces several new issues for testing substation devices such as real time peer-to-peer messaging (Goose), digitized data from CTs and VTs (Sampled values), and Client/Server communication for SCADA purposes. The availability of machine readable, system wide configuration information opens new aspects for an extended testing scope.

This Master class will be run by Alex Apostolov and OMICRON Australia Application engineers with a
combination of Theories, case studies and practical demonstrations on a demo digital substation.

Topics that will be covered include:

  • Building blocks of IEC 61850
  • Evolution of IEC 61850 from Edition 1 to Edition 2
  • The business case for digitalization
  • IEC 61850 Migration strategies – How do we get there from where we are
  • Converting conventional test plans to IEC 61850 Test plans
  • Functional and Performance testing
  • Cyber security and Intrusion detection in digital substations

The event will be held after the Australian Protection Symposium. As an APS attendee, you can enjoy a 50% discount on the IEC 61850 Master class. You are also welcome to register for only the IEC 61850 Masterclass if you wish to do so.
